PaperChapters is a non-commercial reading journal. Your entries are yours. We keep as little as we can, we sell nothing, and there are no ads or trackers on this site.

What we keep

  • Your account: the name you give, your reader name, and your password, stored scrambled (hashed) so nobody can read it, including us. We do not ask for an email address.
  • Your reading journal: the books you add, your bookmark and its history, your entries (marks, notes, quotes, dates and the other things you fill in), your stamps and your reading room.
  • Who you follow and who follows you.
  • Sign-in attempts: to keep strangers out we count tries per reader name for ten minutes.

Who can see your shelves

PaperChapters is a place to see what friends thought of a book. Unless you choose otherwise, other readers who are signed in can find you by your name or reader name, follow you, and read your finished entries with their marks. People without an account see nothing of yours.

  • What other readers never see: your bookmark and its history, your note to self, your nightstand, where you read a book and who you would lend it to.
  • Keep everything to yourself: under Stamps, in your profile, tick "Keep my shelves private". Nobody can find, follow or read you after that.

Cookies and your browser

We use one cookie. It keeps you signed in for up to 60 days and disappears when you sign out. Your browser also remembers how you sort your shelves. We use no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies.

Others involved

  • Hostinger hosts the site and the database, and keeps standard server logs.
  • Open Library provides book details and covers. Our server asks Open Library for them, so Open Library never sees you, your address or what you wrote.

We share your information with nobody else.

Because there is no email

We cannot send you a reset link. If you forget your password, write to the address below from wherever we can recognise you, and we will sort it out by hand.

Delete it

Under Stamps, in your profile, "Close my account" removes your account, your shelves, your entries, your stamps and your follows straight away.
